The mind is a fertile field for ignorance. Wipe out all traces of the mind (Mano-nasanam) – that is the task of the jnani (wise). How to destroy the mind? It is easy once you know what it is. The mind is stuffed with desire. It is a ball filled with air, like a football. Puncture it and it will not move from place to place. Nirvana means, without air. In a square field, the water filled from an irrigation canal appears to be a square; if the field is circular, rectangular or triangular, the sheet of water that fills it will have the same geometrical shape. The mind takes on the form of the desire that fills it. To take another example, it is like a piece of cloth, the warp and the woof being the yarn of desire. The texture, colour, durability, feel, and shine of the cloth will depend upon the desire that constitutes the warp and the woof. Remove the yarn, the warp and woof, one by one the cloth disappears. Der Verstand ist ein fruchtbares Feld für Unwissenheit. Alle Spuren des Verstandes auszulöschen (manonasanam) – das ist die Aufgabe des jnani (Weisen). Wie zerstört man den Verstand? Das ist einfach, wenn man weiß, was er ist. Der Verstand ist mit Begierde angefüllt. Er ist ein mit Luft gefüllter Ball, wie ein Fußball. Wenn du ihn durchstichst, wird er sich nicht von einem Ort zum anderen bewegen. Nirvana bedeutet, ohne Luft. In einem quadratischen Feld erscheint das Wasser, das von einem Bewässerungskanal eingefüllt wird, quadratisch; ist das Feld kreisförmig, rechteckig oder dreieckig, hat die Wasserschicht, die es füllt, die gleiche geometrische Form. Der Geist nimmt die Form des Wunsches an, der ihn erfüllt. Um ein anderes Beispiel zu nehmen, ist er wie ein Stück Stoff, dessen Kette und Schuss das Garn des Verlangens ist. Die Beschaffenheit, die Farbe, die Haltbarkeit, das Gefühl und der Glanz des Stoffes hängen von dem Wunsch ab, der die Kette und den Schuss bildet. Entfernt man das Garn, die Kette und den Schuss, verschwindet der Stoff Stück für Stück. Das ist die Technik von mano nasanam (Zerstörung des Geistes). – Sri Sathya Sai, 16. Oktober 1964.
