Every one of the religious sects elaborated their own rituals and modes of worship, their own priorities in spiritual attainment and their own body of doctrines about the individual, the objective world and God. The purpose of these codes and modes was, in all cases, to purify the mind and insist on the practice of high moral virtues. But this was soon ignored and importance came to be attached to superficial conformity and outer purity. The craving for personal aggrandisement and power made every sect, faith and religion, rigid and dry. There is a great need today to discover the inner spring of all faiths, the spring that fertilises the outer rites and ceremonies. A little quiet study will reveal that there is an undercurrent of moral enthusiasm and spiritual adventure. The word generally used for religion is matha; the word to indicate the mind is mathi. Putting the two together it can be said that matha is primarily engaged or ought to be engaged in straightening and strengthening the mathi. – Divine Discourse, Oct 01, 1976.

Jede der religiösen Sekten hat ihre eigenen Rituale und Formen der Verehrung, ihre eigenen Prioritäten bei der spirituellen Verwirklichung und ihre eigenen Lehren über das Individuum, die objektive Welt und Gott ausgearbeitet. Der Zweck dieser Kodizes und Gebräuche bestand in allen Fällen darin, den Geist zu läutern und auf die Ausübung hoher moralischer Tugenden zu drängen. Dies wurde jedoch bald ignoriert, und man legte mehr Wert auf oberflächliche Konformität und äußere Reinheit. Das Streben nach persönlicher Vergrößerung und Macht machte jede Sekte, jeden Glauben und jede Religion starr und trocken. Es besteht heute ein großes Bedürfnis, die innere Quelle aller Religionen zu entdecken, die Quelle, die die äußeren Riten und Zeremonien befruchtet. Eine kleine, ruhige Studie wird zeigen, dass es eine Unterströmung von moralischem Enthusiasmus und spirituellem Abenteuer gibt. Das Wort, das allgemein für Religion verwendet wird, ist Matha; das Wort, das den Geist bezeichnet, ist Mathi.
