In the prayer Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya (lead me from darkness to light), it is Aditya (The Sun God) that is present as the presiding deity and in the prayer, Mrityor ma amritam gamaya, meaning, we should be led from death to immortality, Saraswati is the presiding deity. Let us examine what death really is. Normally, the process of breathing coming to a halt is regarded as death. There is a deeper meaning here. Saraswati has, as her carrier, the hamsa or breath. Stoppage of breath would mean the absence of Saraswati and thus She is regarded as one who can lead you on from death to immortality. The significance of addressing this prayer to Saraswati is that you are praying to Saraswati (present in your body in the form of Hamsavahini presiding over the process of breathing) that such breath should not enter another human body and again create the same trouble of being reborn. Im Gebet Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya (führe mich von der Dunkelheit zum Licht) ist es Aditya (der Sonnengott), der als vorsitzende Gottheit anwesend ist, und in dem Gebet Mrityor ma amritam gamaya, was bedeutet, dass wir vom Tod zur Unsterblichkeit geführt werden sollen, ist Saraswati die vorsitzende Gottheit. Lasst uns untersuchen, was der Tod wirklich ist. Normalerweise wird der Prozess des Atemstillstandes als Tod angesehen. Hier gibt es eine tiefere Bedeutung. Saraswati hat als Trägerin die Hamsa oder den Atem. Ein Stillstand des Atems würde die Abwesenheit von Saraswati bedeuten, und so wird sie als diejenige angesehen, die uns vom Tod zur Unsterblichkeit führen kann. Die Bedeutung dieses Gebets an Saraswati besteht darin, dass ihr Saraswati (die in eurem Körper in Form von Hamsavahini anwesend ist und den Prozess der Atmung leitet) bittet, dass dieser Atem nicht in einen anderen menschlichen Körper eindringen und wieder das gleiche Problem der Wiedergeburt verursachen soll.
